Egypt’s Constitution Approved

A constitution drafted by Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood-dominated parliament was approved after a referendum that was preceded by violent demonstrations. President Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood said 64 percent of voters backed the charter after two rounds of voting. Voter turnout was approximately one-third of e. The constitution will be followed by a parliamentary election in about two months. The referendum came almost two years after autocrat Hosni Mubarak was forced to step down after a popular uprising. Islamists say the constitution is vital for Egypt’s transition to democracy. But the opposition says the constitution ignores the rights of Christians, who are about ten percent of the population, and women, and could lead to more unrest. They also complained of some irregularities such as polls opening late. The new law sets a limit of two four-year presidential terms. It says the principles of Islamic sharia law remain the main source of legislation in Egypt. Also this weekend, Morsi announced the names of 90 new members he appointed to the upper house of Parliament, most of them not members of his Muslim Brotherhood party.
