Egypt’s Islamists Control Constitution-Drafting Panel to Chagrin of Secularists

Secularists in Egypt are concerned that the nation’s new constitution will reflect the religious views of the Islamists who will dominate the panel created to draft a new constitution. Islamist parties overwhelmingly won the parliamentary elections and will now dominate the drafting committee according to a list of panel members released on Sunday. The selection process itself was dominated by members of the party of the Muslim Brotherhood and the ultraconservative Islamist Nour party. Secular Egyptians had hoped – and believed they had been promised – that the drafting panel would be open to non-legislators, but that did not prove to be the case. As a result, the secularists fear the final draft of the new constitution will reflect a radical shift toward religious law. The six women and six Coptic Christians on the list are seen as incidental. The Nour party openly advocates for a government based strictly on Islamic law.
