Egypt’s Loser in Presidential Election Leaves the Country Under Cloud

The runner-up in Egypt’s presidential race has left the country amid reports that he is under investigation for corruption. Ahmed Shafiq is a former prime minister during the Hosni Mubarak regime as is considered to have been a close confidant of the ousted president. Shafiq was defeated in a run-off for the presidency by Mohamed Morsi, the candidate of the Muslim Brotherhood. The prosecutor general on Monday reportedly transferred a number of corruption cases against Shafiq to the investigating judge. His campaign committee said on its Facebook page that Shafiq left to perform a personal pilgrimage to the holy sites in Saudi Arabia.
