Egypt’s Morsy Ties Commitment to 1979 Treaty to Resolution of Palestinian Conflict

In an interview with The New York Times, Egyptian President Mohamed Morsy apparently linked his country’s continued observance of the historic 1979 Egyptian-Israeli treaty with the US fulfilling promises regarding Palestinian statehood. Morsy said that, “As long as peace and justice are not fulfilled for the Palestinians, then the treaty remains unfulfilled.” Morsy told the paper that successive American administrations “purchased with American taxpayer money the dislike if not the hatred of the peoples of the region (Middle East)” through its support of Israel.

Meanwhile, just days before returning to New York in its quest for non-member status at the United Nations, the Palestinian Authority is warning donor states that unless the Israeli-Palestinian peace process moves from “conflict management” to a “just and lasting political agreement,” “Israelis and Palestinians will slide into one state governed by the principles of apartheid.” The admonition comes in a report to donor countries that will be distributed on Sunday. In it, the Palestinians demand an end to all Israeli control it still exerts over Palestinians in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem; focusing heavily on what the Oslo Accords deemed to be “Area C,” where Israel has both administrative and security control over about 60% of the West Bank. Israel has prepared a report detailing the measures it has taken to ease its control where it exists and what it claims are efforts to improve conditions for Palestinians.
