A three-judge appellate panel on Saturday dropped all charges that remained against former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. His conviction on corruption charges for which he was sentenced to three years stands, but charges — including murder charges stemming from the deaths of protestors demonstrating as he was ousted from office in 2011 — have been dropped. Mubarak and his two sons were acquitted on additional corruption charges relating to the state contract to sell gas to Israel. The decision was not entirely unexpected given the embrace by the new regime of President Al-Sisi of former senior officials from the Mubarak years. International analysts have long held that the case against Mubarak was poorly assembled and crafted.
