The U.S. State Department has deferred the Fulbright scholarships awarded to eight Palestinians living in the Gaza Strip because the students are unable to obtain exit visas from Israel. The eight were to have studied at American universities, but according to U.S. officials, because of the visa issue the decision was made to "transfer the Fulbrights to the West Bank rather than lose them for the year." A spokesman for the State Department said the eight students remain eligible for the scholarships.
