Elders to Head to the Holy Land

The Elders, a group of eminent global leaders who use their influence to help solve the world’s ills, have announced a visit to Israel and the Palestinian territories at the end of August. The idea behind the group, announced a couple ago by former South African President Nelson Mandela, is for its famous members to "offer their collective influence and experience to support peace building, help address major causes of human suffering and promote the shared interests of humanity." But the elders don’t seem to have included much knocking of heads or active conflict resolution efforts on their Israel itinerary. Thedelegation, which will include Jimmy Carter, Mary Robinson and Desmond Tutu and be led by former Brazilian President Fernando Henrique Cardoso , is set to meet with "a wide cross-section of Israeli and Palestinian society including grassroots organizations, young people, members of civil society, independent experts, business leaders and others," according to a statement. "The Elders are supportive of current peace efforts but have no intention of intervening in that process," it said.
