The Enemy of Gaza’s Enemy is…Dahlan

If there is any validity to the leaked document reported by the Palestinian newspaper Al-Quds, we are again witnessing a manifestation of the all-important and ever-true adage: “An enemy of my enemy is my friend.” The newspaper is reporting that Mohammad Dahlan, former Fatah security chief for the Gaza Strip before it was overtaken by Hamas, has reached an agreement with Hamas leadership to become the effective head of the Gaza Strip. According to the document that surfaced, the new Hamas leadership, in talks brokered by Egypt, agreed to place Dahlan in the leadership role to work with the Iranian-backed Islamists to outflank Fatah and the Palestinian Authority. The target: Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. One intangible that is being discussed is the role Dahlan played for many years as the darling of the Western nations. As part of the alleged deal, the Egyptians get Hamas to mitigate the rising level of terrorism in Egypt and in particular, the northern Sinai Peninsula from its terrorist allies and fellow Tehran terror proxies. It remains to be seen whether the arrangement will boost Dahlan’s prestige and position as one of the names most frequently mentioned as a successor to Abbas.
