European Soccer Body Bars Israel From Broadcasting Games In Jewish West Bank Communities

Israel’s public broadcaster Kan reportedly is on the verge of losing the rights to air the World Cup and Euro 2020 competitions over its refusal to accept a demand by European soccer’s governing body that the games not be transmitted to viewers in Jewish communities located in the West Bank. Kan is believed to have bid $5.8 million for the opportunity to show games in the early rounds of the two sporting events. However, its contract with the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) apparently does not apply to what is defined as “the Palestinian territories.” According to Israeli media, a Qatari company bought the rights to broadcast the matches in the regions captured by Israel in the 1967 war. While Kan has offered to air the matches exclusively through Israeli cable and satellite technology to ensure that only Israeli citizens can view them, the sides have not managed to reach an agreement.
