European Union, led by Germany, Seeks to Salvage Nuclear Agreement

The European Union continues to work feverishly to salvage the Iranian nuclear. With Germany taking the point, the Europeans are trying to bring the witch’s broomstick to Tehran – a mechanism demanded by the Iranians whereby Tehran is able to sell its oil and conduct business without feeling the effects any boycott or sanction levied against the Islamic Republic. German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas was the latest to offer encouragement to the Iranians that their demands would be met when he dropped by unannounced on Saturday en route home. But although Maas reportedly “coordinated his trip with Britain and France” and even “discussed it with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Iranian leaders apparently remain unimpressed, doubting that Germany has the leverage to fill the Tehran list of demands. That, according to the experts, cannot be fulfilled by anyone but the United States. Iranian Foreign Minister Zarif made it clear that the only effective course of action for the EU is to “normalize its relationship with Iran.” Parliament Speaker Larijani chastised French President Macron for telling President Trump that they “share the same objectives.” To the Iranians, this means no nuclear weapons for Iran. The result: Larijani called Macron’s remarks “shameful and inept.”
