Member states of the European Union have pledged $1.1 billion dollars to United Nations agencies aiding refugees from Syria. The aid will be directed toward relief efforts in countries neighboring Syria where those fleeing their homes number in the millions. Balkan nations which are bearing the brunt of migrants pouring in are to receive assistance from the EU. European Council President Donald Tusk warned that “greatest tide of refugees and migrants is yet to come,” according to the BBC. Meanwhile, the issue of migrants and their impact on EU members remains the most contentious of issues in European capitals.
