Ex-Islamist Commander in Algeria Calls for Al-Qa’ida Surrender

The head of Islamic Salvation Army of Algeria in the 1990s has called on members of Al-Qa’ida in the country to surrender. Madani Mezrag made the plea after in-fighting between Islamist factions in the North African state. Mezrag said an initiative would be launched in the next few days to bring the fighting to an end, according to the online news portal Magharebia. There are several armed Islamist organizations operating in Algeria, with one recently adopting the name Al-Qa’ida in the Islamic Maghreb. The name change was approved by Al-Qa’ida leaders on the Afghan-Pakistani border.
