Fatah: Hamas’ Haniyyeh Still Reviewing Reconciliation Agreement

Reconciliation efforts between Fatah and Hamas are being held up because Gaza’s Hamas chief, Ismail Haniyyeh, has asked for additional time to review the draft agreement according to a statement issued on Monday by a senior Fatah official. The statement was made in response to a remark by Hamas deputy Prime Minister Ziad Al-Zaza to the effect that the hold-up is Fatah’s failure to provide requested information about arms, security forces and employees to Hamas. While the tit-for-tat accusations continue, there has been no progress on the implementation of either of two reconciliation agreements signed by Fatah and Hamas in 2010. The split between the Fatah-led Palestinian Authority in the West Bank and the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip continues to be the main obstacle to moving forward toward statehood.
