Fatah, Hamas Meet Face-to-Face for Reconciliation Talks

The Egyptians are not only trying to broker a truce between Israel and Hamas but also one between Hamas and its main Palestinian rival, Fatah. The two factions are holding face-to-face talks for the first time in almost a year. Hamas wrested control of Gaza from Fatah in 2007 in what Fatah refers to as a “bloody coup.” Since then the movements have accused one another of torturing and killing members of the rival organization. The international community as a whole wants to see an early rapprochement, which will pave the way to the opening of border crossings between Egypt and Gaza.
