The resignation Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Faya’d submitted was due to become effective after March 31, but Faya’d says he’ll stay in place until a new government is seated. And perhaps beyond. Those close to the PM have hinted in recent days that Faya’d could be persuaded to remain in his position. Often referred to as “the favorite of Western leaders,” Faya’d brings a lot to the table in terms of providing an address inside the Palestinian government that is trusted by international leaders. Faya’d, who holds a doctorate from the University of Texas, was an official of the World Bank and before that worked with the International Monetary Fund. Because Palestinian unity talks have not show much progress, it could be a considerable time before a new government can be formed. Notwithstanding his credibility with the international community, his relationship with his own constituents is much stormier. Specifically, members of the ‘Abbas government oppose Faya’d’s control over monetary issues. This, plus failure to move peace talks with Israel along, are said to be the primary reasons for his resignation in the first place.
Faya’d Stays On Despite Resignation
