Fighting Intensifies in Sana’a as Saleh Digs In

Yemen’s President Ali Abdullah Saleh is intensifying his determination not to relinquish his 33-year rule after a deal brokered by the Gulf States failed to materialize. “Dozens” of deaths were reported in the capital Sana’a overnight following reports of at least 38 dead the day before. A single explosion is said to have killed almost 30. An opposition television station was reported to have been destroyed and leaders of the Al-Ahmar tribal family that split from the president in March are said to have been detained. News agencies are reporting an increasing number of Sana’a residents fleeing the city. The U.S. has ordered its non-essential diplomatic corps and diplomatic families to leave Yemen.
