Turkey’s Energy Minister Taner Yildiz said the final death toll in the worst mining accident in Turkey’s history was 301, and that 485 miners escaped or were rescued. He said the government will investigate the cause of the accident, and make decision on future coal mining operations. The accident has sparked angry demonstrations in Turkey aimed at the government of President Recep Erdogan, who reportedly used an anti-Israel slur at one demonstrator. Many in Turkey say the accident could have been avoided with better safety procedures.
