First 100 of 6,000 Stranded Gazans Return Home

One hundred of an estimated 6,000 residents of the Gaza Strip, who have been unable to return to their homes because the Rafah crossing point has been closed, were allowed to enter via Israeli territory on Sunday and re-enter Gaza through a different crossing point. Rafah, the main crossing point, was closed when European monitors fled following the Hamas conquest of the Gaza Strip in mid-June. Sunday’s test-run of bringing 100 Gazans home was the result of a three-way arrangement among the Palestinians, Egypt and Israel. There had been some fear that the repatriation would be upset by Hamas which rejected the deal because Israel was able to approve the names of those who are allowed to participate. Another 500 Gazans will return home on Tuesday.
