For First Time in Years, Israel not Imposing Closure on West Bank for Holidays

For the first time in years, Israel has decided not to impose a closure, preventing Palestinians from the West Bank from entering Israel during the Jewish religious holidays. Rosh HaShana, the Jewish New Year, begins at sundown on Sunday and continues through Tuesday. In past years, the closure has been virtually automatic. This year, Defense Minister Ehud Barack, who makes that decision, focused on a highly visible deployment alert troops and border police at key junctions and throughout the nation in places where crowds gather, but if forgoing an actual closure which includes restricting the movement of Palestinians between cities and towns inside the West Bank. This year, freedom of access will remain unimpeded. Some argue the time is not right for easing restrictions because of the fury that continues to spread across the Arab world on the pretext of protesting an American film disrespectful toward the Prophet Mohammed. Rioting continued in at least 10 nations following the melees in Egypt and Libya, where the US ambassador was killed. Israeli police clash with protestors in east Jerusalem following prayers on Friday. So far, there is no indication that the violence is abating.
