Foreign Journalists Spar with Israeli Government Over Denying Reporters Access to Temple Mount

Journalists who cover Israel and the Palestinians are at odds with the government and police whom they say are wrongfully denying reporters access to Jerusalem’s Temple Mount, or Haram Al-Sharif to Muslims. On Monday, the Foreign Press Association, the umbrella organization representing journalists who work for non-local news outlets, made public a rebuke of proposed procedures the police have been ordered to compile as part of court-ordered dialogue in a case the FPA brought before the Supreme Court. The police procedures would remain “vague and arbitrary” according to the statement by FPA president Joseph Federman who argued that, “it makes no sense to ban the media [from the Temple Mount] when everyday public and tourists still have access.” The FPA also charges the Israeli police with ignoring press credentials and preventing accredited media from doing their jobs. Among the police guidelines that have been submitted to the court and will be responded to by the FPA is the ability of police to prevent access to the area when violence is imminent or when it appears to police that allowing press onto the Temple Mount would exacerbate the possibility of violence. The foreign press says the guidelines are too vague.
