Secret talks between the United States and Egypt’s ruling military council have been exposed by Mohamed ElBaradei, the former head of the United Nations nuclear watchdog organization and a leading opposition figure during the Mubarak regime. Speaking to the Iranian state-run FARS news agency, ElBaradei said the talks were dominated by American exhortations to the Egyptians to leave the historic 1979 treaty with Israel in tact during the current stormy transition from Mubarak. Considerable unrest remains and observers, including the US, fear that the treaty is jeopardized by the strong showing in elections by Islamist parties. The Muslim Brotherhood has said it will not negate the treaty and the Salafist Al-Nour party has indicated a willingness to negotiate with Israel. Media reports in Israel indicate the ambassador to Cairo intends to attempt to make direct inroads with the Egyptian parties.
