Israel‘s Supreme Court has been asked to decide whether it was legal for the government to strip four Hamas politicians of their Israeli citizenship. The four – three legislators and one cabinet minister – are members of the Hamas-led Palestinian government, residents of Jerusalem and citizens of Israel. Their citizenship was revoked when they refused to renounce their Hamas memberships after Hamas won control of the Palestinian government. Three of the Hamas politicians have been jailed by Israel as a means of pressuring Hamas into returning an Israeli soldier it captured last June. The fourth fled to Jordan. It is expected to be a matter of months before the court issues its ruling.
