France’s Minister of Justice Quits over Terrorist Law

France’s Minister of Justice, Christiane Taubira, the first Guianese-born French national to serve in the cabinet, has resigned after openly disagreeing with President François Hollande’s bill that would strip French citizenship from dual-citizens who are convicted of terrorism, a measure proposed by the president following the terrorist attacks that shook Paris on November 13, 2015.

An Élysée Palace statement announced that François Hollande and Christiane Taubira decided it was best for her to step down as the debate on the constitutional revision necessary to pass the bill into law begins in the National Assembly on Wednesday.

The resignation did not come as a total surprise. Taubira has continually voiced her opposition to any law that would rescind the nationality of French citizens convicted of acts of terror.

“The president of the Republic has formally thanked Christiane Taubira for her efforts in Cabinet,” the Élysée statement declared. “She has consistently worked for the reform of our justice system and played a major role in having the ‘marriage-for-all’ legislation enacted.”

Taubira, a popular figure among the governing Socialists, tweeted that “Sometimes to resist means staying, sometimes resisting means leaving. Out of loyalty to the self, to us. For the last word in ethics and law.”

Karima Delli, a political ally and European Union representative tweeted “Christiane Taubira resignation: When a government of the left loses its values, it loses a valuable personality.”
