Fresh Talks in Sudan on Transfer of Power to Civilian Body
Sudan’s Transitional Military Council (TMC) on Monday will hold fresh talks with protest leaders over transferring power to a civilian administration. Members of the Alliance for Freedom and Change – an umbrella group for the demonstrators – announced that military officials had invited them for a new round of discussions after several days of deadlock. Following mass protests that induced the army to depose longtime ruler Omar al-Bashir, the TMC said it intended to rule Sudan for a period of two years. However, protesters have defied the generals’ plan, continuing to take to the streets to demand the immediate formation of an interim civilian government. The new talks come amid a weeks-long sit-in outside army headquarters in Khartoum geared toward pressuring the TMC to cede control over the North African country.
