Gamal Mubarak to Join Dad in Washington

The son of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak is expected to lose his diplomatic virginity when it comes to dealing with Israelis as he accompanies his dad to the initiation of direct peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians in Washington. Gamal Mubarak, 47, is widely touted as the likely successor of the elder and ailing Mubarak, whose term ends next year. The 82-year-old Egyptian leader has until now refrained from taking his son with him on diplomatic trips and this would be the first known encounter for Gamal with Israeli leaders. The younger Mubarak, however, is reportedly going to keep a low profile and will not, for example, attend tonight’s festive dinner hosted by President Obama at the White House for the leaders of Israel, Jordan, Egypt and the Palestinian Authority. It’s also been reported that a rally has been planned by Egyptian expats in New York to support Gamal Mubarak and call on him to take up the reins of Egypt’s leadership.
