The armed groups firing rockets from the Gaza Strip into Israel have warned the Israelis that they won’t tolerate the retaliatory strikes their rocketry is creating. Following a month – long respite from missile fire, a single rocket landed in Israel last Thursday followed by a barrage of at least ten missiles a day later. One evaded the Iron Dome system and landed in an Israeli home causing considerable damage but no injuries. Israel’s military fired back killing a 27-year old man, prompting the calls for revenge and threats of retaliation. Military sources in Jerusalem believe Hamas was not behind this weekend’s launches, but despite certainty that Islamic Jihad was, indeed, responsible, Israeli policy is that because Hamas rules the Gaza Strip, any violence that comes from the territories it controls bears the address of Hamas. Nevertheless, tension continues to spiral upward and talk of an Israeli ground invasion is becoming rife.
