Gaza Truce Holds; Palestinians Deploy 13,000 Against Rockets

The truce between Israel and the Palestinian factions in the Gaza Strip continues to hold after its first day, despite being tested by Qassam rocket fire. The Palestinian Authority deployed 13,000 security troops in order to prevent terrorist groups from firing the homemade weapons in an effort to upset the nascent peace initiative. Four rockets were fired into Israel during the first hours after the truce went into effect at 6 a.m. Sunday morning. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said during the day that his government was committed to giving the agreement a chance to take hold. Monday morning, though, saw a fatal firefight between Israeli and Palestinian forces in the West Bank. After an Israeli patrol was fired on near the town of Qabatiya, troops shot and killed two Palestinians. Palestinian sources report that one of those killed was an armed fighter, while the other was a woman passerby caught up in the crossfire. Nevertheless, talk has already begun concerning extending the cease-fire into the West Bank even as senior Israeli army officers are vigorously arguing that the respite is giving Hamas time to rearm, particularly by smuggling weapons through tunnels from Egypt into the Gaza Strip.
