Mohammed Al-Emadi visited the Gaza Strip on Monday as a representative of the Qatari government, bringing with him word of a $9 million gift to help alleviate shortages of fuel and medicine. But the envoy’s reception by Gazans was anything but warm, at one point necessitating a quick rescue by Hamas security personnel. At a news conference in the Dar Al-Shifa hospital, staff members were angry that the Qatari failed to speak to their plight and unpaid salaries, and instead kicked the issue to the Palestinian Authority which is the body that is supposed to pay them but which has reduced payments because of financial crises. Qatari flags were trashed and photos of the Emir of Qatar were destroyed. The hospital was decorated as a background for the visitor and United Nations representatives, but the on-going strike because of money owed to workers by Gaza’s Hamas rulers upset celebratory plans.
