Gen. Al-Sissi, Presumed Presidential Election Victor, Says He’ll End Muslim Brotherhood

The man who is the overwhelming favorite to become Egypt’s next president promised on Monday that his election spells the end of the Muslim Brotherhood. Field Marshal Abed-Fatteh Al-Sissi, the force behind the military that overthrew Hosni Mubarak and Mohamed Morsi, told a television interviewer that the Islamist group is “finished” and replied “yes” when asked whether it was accurate to say that the Muslim Brotherhood would not exist under his presidency. The Brotherhood’s candidate, Mohamed Morsi, swept to victory after longtime President Hosni Mubarak was overthrown in 2011. One year later, the military overthrew Morsi and installed an interim government. Since that time, the Brotherhood has been fighting the government in the streets of Egypt. Hundreds of its members have been sentenced to death by Egyptian courts in recent days. Al-Sissi said that when he is elected, the military will not have a role in ruling the country. He also said that two assassination attempts aimed at him have been thwarted.
