Government Rift In Lebanon Grows

The governmental crisis in Lebanon continues to grow with resigned speaker Nabi Berri’s insistence that he will ignore acts of the Siniora government, including the decision to authorize an international tribunal to try suspects in the assassination of former prime minister Rafiq Hariri. Following the resignations of ministers representing Berri’s Amal faction and Hizbullah, the former speaker claims the government is no longer constitutional. He claims that the National Accord demands that all factions be represented in the government, a condition no longer met with the Shi’ite bloc’s absence. According to the Daily Star newspaper, Lebanon‘s president – who is pro-Syrian – is in agreement with Berri’s position that all decisions of the Siniora government are unconstitutional.
