Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis affirmed Greece’s support for Lebanon’s institutions, including the Lebanese army, during a visit to Beirut on Monday. Mitsotakis emphasized Greece’s commitment to helping Lebanon recover from its economic and political challenges while highlighting the importance of implementing United Nations Resolution 1701.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati, Mitsotakis stated, “Greece has been and will remain a full partner in your efforts to rebuild your country.” He stressed the Lebanese army’s key role in maintaining the cease-fire agreement with Israel and ensuring the return of displaced people to southern Lebanon. Mitsotakis also expressed readiness to strengthen military ties between the two nations and voiced support for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, the peacekeeping force deployed along Lebanon’s southern border.
“We must work together and collectively to ensure the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria and respect for human rights in all communities and ethnic groups in this country,” Mitsotakis added.
Mikati said the discussions focused on deepening bilateral cooperation, including potential economic and trade agreements that could help Lebanon address its severe financial crisis. He reiterated the importance of the Lebanese army’s role in enforcing UN Resolution 1701 and maintaining regional stability.
During his visit, Mitsotakis also held talks with Lebanese House Speaker Nabih Berri and Army Commander Joseph Aoun, underlining Greece’s commitment to Lebanon’s security and economic recovery.
