Grotesque Cartoon Draws Apology from Rupert Murdoch

News Corp CEO Rupert Murdoch on Monday tweeted an apology for his newspaper’s running of the grotesque cartoon depicting Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu constructing a brick wall with blood-like mortar and with bodies appearing to be Arab caught between bricks. The London-based Sunday Times touched-off a maelstrom of anger when the cartoon by Gerald Scarfe appeared. In his message, Murdoch said the artist “never reflected the opinions of the Sunday Times,” and called the cartoon “grotesque” and “offensive.” Members of Britain’s Jewish community had condemned the cartoon which ran on International Holocaust Remembrance Day, saying it was reminiscent of anti-Semitic blood libels.
