Guatemala’s President Announces Embassy Move from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem
Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales said in a Facebook posting on Sunday that his country has decided to follow the lead of US President Donald Trump and move his nation’s embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Like the US, Guatemala also had previously located its embassy in the capital but removed it under intense international pressure. But the American intent to make the move back has apparently opened the door for some others to follow, albeit very few at that. Sources in Jerusalem report the Czech Republic has the matter under consideration, and in an interview Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu hinted at others working toward a decision to move their respective embassies to Jerusalem but declined to identify those nations. For all the brouhaha surrounding the Trump pronouncement, very little has changed and few expect there to be any real movement on the move for several years. The Palestinian reaction was to declare an end to any participation in a United States-sponsored peace process despite the observation of many that the Trump statement does nothing to counter Palestinian interests.
