Guessing Game on Rouhani’s Future Follows Double-Impeachment of Pro-Western Deal Ministers

After two cabinet ministers in Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s government who supported the 2015 nuclear agreement with the United States and Western powers were impeached, speculation became rife over the future of Rouhani himself. As The Media Line has reported, the Islamic Republic’s Supreme Ruler, the Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, made a rare mea culpa when he called it his mistake for allowing Rouhani to negotiate the nuclear agreement with the West, paired-off with former U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry. Rouhani and those who favored making the agreement obtained Khamenei’s approval be convincing him that the end of sanctions and the cash that would be forthcoming would spur on a major bump in the economy. But after the deal was cut, there was no discernable economic bump – Western observers suggesting that the windfall dollars went to the several Iranian terror proxies fighting in arenas such as Yemen, the Gaza Strip, and Syria rather than to the betterment of the Iranian people. Labor Minister Ali Rabiei was impeached on August 8 and Economic Minister Karbasian on Sunday. Those who favored the nuclear deal are accused of making “wrong decisions” that led to the looting of public assets.
