Haaretz Writer: Palestinian Resolution Could Embarrass Iran, Syria

Among the plethora of opinions appearing in Mideast media, a fascinating point was raised in an editorial piece by Akiva Eldar, one of Israel’s senior journalists writing for the daily Haaretz. Eldar writes that while the Palestinians have not yet revealed the text of the resolution they will submit to the UN Security Council, word is that it will call for an “independent state along pre-1967 borders with east Jerusalem as its capital that will live in peace alongside the state of Israel.” (emphasis provided) Eldarsuggests that the reference to Israel could make voting for the resolution problematic – “embarrassing” – for nations such as Iran and Syria because “they will have to choose between a vote against the state of Palestine, or the conferral of recognition, of sorts, to the State of Israel in the 1967 borders.”
