Hamas Moves to Turkey

The Islamist Hamas movement has set up a new “West Bank and Jerusalem Headquarters” in Istanbul, after the group was expelled from Syria. According to the Israeli newspaper Yediot Aharonot, members of the Hamas military wing are undergoing training in Turkey. Relations between Israel and Turkey soured in 2010 after Israeli commandos attacked a ship trying to break Israel’s siege of the Gaza Strip, killing ten Turkish citizens. According to the Israeli newspaper, hundreds of Hamas recruits are trained in Turkey in the use of light weapons, bomb-making and covert operations, and are then sent for additional training in Syria. From there, they go to the West Bank to engage in terror activities and establish secret cells. The report also said that the killers of three Israeli teenagers last summer were sent by the Hamas headquarters in Turkey.
