Haniyya Blinks First in Stand-off with Fayyad; Tehran Conference Draws 12o Nations

The head of Hamas in the Gaza Strip, Ismail Haniyya, announced that he’s not going to Tehran to participate in the conference of non-aligned nations after all. His change of plans came one day after Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad issued a scathing rebuke charging Iran with “undermining Palestinian unity and against the Palestinian Authority’s role as the guardian of the Palestinian people both in the Gaza Strip and in the West Bank including Jerusalem.”  Fayyad, and later Foreign Minister Riad Al-Malki, warned that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas would not attend the Tehran conference this week if Haniyya did. When the conference kicked-off on Sunday, the Iranians tried to back-pedal, denying they had ever extended an invitation to Haniyya. Meanwhile, 120 nations did show up in Tehran for the conference, described as a statement of solidarity by non-aligned nations against the West. The US is angry that United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is providing the conference with prestige and legitimacy by attending. The US says it’s particularly inappropriate that Ban be there given the fact that Iran is ignoring multiple UN Security Council resolutions. The West is also concerned by the expected presence of newly-elected Egyptian President Mohamed Morsy, underscoring concerns that he will lead Egypt away from the West and  into the Iranian camp.
