Easter is being celebrated Sunday morning in ceremonies throughout Israel and the Palestinian territories, led by celebration of mass by Latin Patriarch Fouad Twal at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in the Old City of Jerusalem, the site where tradition says Jesus was crucified and rose from the dead. An estimated 4,000 Coptic and Catholic Egyptians are expected to travel to Jerusalem for Easter, taking advantage of the fact that newly-installed Pope Tawadros has not forbidden Egyptians from visiting the Holy City as did his predecessor as a statement in support for the Palestinians. Nevertheless, some senior church officials threatened that those who visit Jerusalem will be targeted with religious sanctions.
