Israel‘s security apparatus has placed the nation under high alert on the eve of the Annapolis Mideast peace summit. Fearing the possibility of rocket attacks, suicide bombings, kidnappings or shootings from groups such as Hamas and Islamic Jihad, which reject the American peace efforts, Israeli officials are vigilant for signs of infiltration from Palestinian areas. On Sunday traffic was tied up for hours in and around Jerusalem as police searched for what they believed were two terrorists on their way to the capital to carry out an attack. Police said the massive search was called off after "new information was received," but did not indicate whether any terrorists had been apprehended. Additional checkpoints have been placed on main thoroughfares leading to the capital.
