Human Rights Watch: Stop Human Shields in Gaza

Palestinian armed organizations must end their practice of calling Palestinians to gather around the homes of people Israel has selected for targeted killings, said Human Rights Watch in a report published on Wednesday. The idea was adopted in earnest last week, after the Israel Air Force called what it said was a Palestinian terrorist to give him notice that his house was about to be attacked. Rather than fleeing the scene, the Palestinian called on those in his neighborhood to gather in and around his home. As a result the Israelis called off their planned strike. “There is no excuse for calling civilians to the scene of a planned attack,” said Sarah Leah Whitson, Middle East director at Human Rights Watch. “Whether or not the home is a legitimate military target, knowingly asking civilians to stand in harm’s way is unlawful.”
