For the first time, Israel has selected a singer from the Ethiopian community to represent the nation at the annual Eurovision Song Contest. The competition is one of those rarities that is known throughout the world but few in the USA are aware of its existence. Nevertheless, many world-class singing groups such as ABBA got its break through Eurovision and hit songs such as “Hallelujah!” became standards because of the contest. Each year’s competition is held in the nation that won the previous year’s competition; this year, the Netherlands. Israel has won the competition four times.
