In his first speech after being sworn in as Egypt’s president, Abdel-Fatteh Al-Sisi vowed to heal the nation, with notable exceptions. In an obvious reference to members of the Muslim Brotherhood, the former military head said, “There will be reconciliation between the sons of our nation except those who had committed crimes against them or adopted violence. There will be no acquiescence or laxity shown to those who resorted to violence.” Speaking to about 1,000 invited guests at the Presidential Palace, Al-Sisi reportedly seemed to acknowledge concerns about his regime from pro-democracy and human rights activists who are concerned that Mubarak-era practices were being revisited.
