In Lebanon, Opposition Lumps Syria and Hizbullah at Protest Rally

Lebanon’s opposition parties staged a mass rally at a Tripoli stadium on Sunday decrying Syrian President Bashar Al-Asad for his violent campaign against his political foes while including Hizbullah in its criticism. The event also demanded the government meet its international obligations by funding the UN’s Special Tribunal for Lebanon, the probe into the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafiq Al-Hariri. The unrest in Syria has been a divisive issue since it began last February, with those elements friendly to Hizbullah, which controls 21 of 30 cabinet seats, supporting Al-Asad, and those who were in power in the last government opposing Syria and Hizbullah. Hizbullah is preventing the government from living up to its commitment to fund a portion of the investigation – an obligation Prime Minister Najib Mikata supports even though he owes his position to Hizbullah.
