In Yemen, Houthis Reject UNSC Resolution to Cede Power, Release President

The situation in Yemen continued to deteriorate as the Shiite Houthis, whose armed fighters are in control of the capital Sana'a, rejected a UN Security Council Resolution that called for them to cede power, release President Hadi from house arrest, and conduct good-faith negotiations. The Houthis responded by admonishing the UN delegates to "respect the will and sovereignty of the Yemeni people and be accurate and objective." Neighboring Gulf countries are losing patience and want the Security Council to authorize a military response to the Houthis. President Abbed Rabou Mansour Hadi has been held under house arrest since early February when he and his government resigned. Information Minister Nadia Al-Sakkaf has tweeted that Hadi is ill with a heart condition and needs to travel abroad for medical attention. Meanwhile, troops loyal to Hadi continue to fight the Houthis in the streets of the capital.
