An independent American union, the 35,000 member strong United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America, has voted to embrace the anti-Israel “BDS” – Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions – movement. The union represents workers in the manufacturing sector as well as public sector and private non-profit sector jobs. Despite the small size of the union, it is nevertheless the first national union to join the BDS movement, a blow to those in the pro-Israel world who minimize the impact of efforts to isolate the Jewish state. Using extreme language of those behind the movement, the UERMWA said its goal was “to pressure Israel to end its apartheid over the Palestinians just as similar tactics helped to end South African apartheid in the 1980s.” It also called for an end to US aid to Israel.
