The International Tennis Federation has fined Indonesia more than $30,000 because of refusal to play against Israel in the Fed Cup over the summer. The Indonesia women’s team said it refused to compete in Israel because of Israel’s actions in Gaza and because Jakarta has no diplomatic ties with Israel. Of the fine, some $20,000 will go to the Israel Tennis Federation. The Indonesians have also been barred from participating in the tournament next year. As a result of its failure to take part, Indonesia will be forced to play in a lesser regional zone when it rejoins the Fed Cup in 2008.
