Iran Continues Crackdown On Women Defying Hijab Law

An Iranian woman who publicly removed her veil in protest of a mandatory hijab law was sentenced to two years in prison on charges of “encouraging moral corruption.” The unnamed woman will serve only three months behind bars, with the remaining time suspended as she reportedly is in need of long-term medical treatment. It follows dozens of similar arrests of Iranian women in recent weeks, although most of those detained for defying the country’s law on appearing in public in a headscarf have been released without charge. In December, an Iranian woman who defiantly took off her hijab before waving it on a stick became one of the faces of protests that spread throughout the country but have since died out. A photograph of that woman was widely used in connection with the White Wednesday campaign, in which women in Iran wear white to demonstrate against the strict dress code implemented in the aftermath of the 1979 Islamic revolution.
