Iran, Israel Face Off the Oscars

The conflict between Israel and Iran is moving out of the realm of assassinated nuclear scientists and threats of war and onto a Hollywood red carpet. Iran will have its first production in 14 years in contention for the coveted Oscar award in the best foreign-language film while an Israeli film was put on the prize’s shortlist for the fourth time in five years. “A Separation,” Iranian director Asghar Farhadi’s domestic drama, also scored a nod for best original screenplay. The Israeli film “Footnote” by director Joseph Cedar depicts a rivalry between father and son academics. Cedar, who is enjoying his second Oscar nomination, told The Washington Post he saw “something poetic” in the two bitter foes both having films nominated. Other contenders for the best foreign film award are coming from Poland, Canada and Belgium. The 84th Academy Awards will take place on February 26, with citizens of the Great Satan judging.
