With the Bushehr nuclear power station poised to begin producing electricity, Iran has announced its intention to construct eight more nuclear plants. The plan was unveiled by the country’s foreign minister, Manouchehr Mottaki, according to the ISNA news agency. The last consignment of fuel needed to make Bushehr operational arrived in Iran on Monday. Bushehr is a light-water reactor with a 1,000 megawatt capacity. The fuel and other elements of the station were supplied by Russian companies, with a considerable delay due to reported payment defaults. However, Bushehr’s director, Mahmoud Jaafari, said the plant will open on time.
