Amid reports that the tide has turned against the Assad regime in the Syrian civil war, Iran is sending a force of 15,000 troops to shore-up Assad’s army in its fight against the rebel fighters. According to Lebanon’s Daily Star newspaper, the force is made up of soldiers from Iran, Afghanistan and Iraq and its primary goal is to reverse a string of losses by the army in Idlib province. The state-run IRNA news agency quoted Gen. Qasem Soleimani, commander of Iran’s elite Quds Force, as saying, “The world will be surprised by what we and the Syrian military leadership are preparing for the coming days.” Meanwhile, local officials remain critical of what they see as the failure of the US-led coalition to have any real deterrent effect on the Islamic State despite last week’s boast by Deputy Secretary of State Anthony Blinken that the nine-month campaign has killed more than 10,000 ISIS fighters. ISIS is currently poised to take over the provincial capital of Hassakeh in northeastern Syria according to Kurdish sources.
